Chapter Six

When Jessica’s parents died when she was seventeen, she had been shocked and upset. When old man Flaherty had died and not left her a penny she had been distraught. The level of difference between those feelings and the one she got when Clint stopped their buggy in front of a farmhouse that looked like it could only be two rooms wide with a weather-beaten exterior and not a tree or flower in sight…there were just no words for it.

Clint slid off the seat and the kids jumped over the sides. Michael took the baby while Gretchen jumped down. Jessica continued to sit in her seat to wait for her husband to come around and offer her a hand. Instead she watched in indignation as he began unhitching the team. Jessica gave up and helped herself down. No sooner had her feet hit the dirt than he told Gretchen,

“Take Jessica in and show her where everything is. I’m gonna change in the barn, I have some plowing to do. I’ll be back in time for supper.”

Jessica’s mouth was so wide open she could have used it as a bear trap. She watched him lead the team to the barn, not looking back or in her direction at all. Jessica looked at Gretchen and said, “Is your father always so quiet?”

“Yeah,” the little girl said, “Since Ma died. He wasn’t loud before that, but he was never so quiet either. He’s still sad.”

Jessica took that at least to mean that he was still broken up over the death of his wife and not that he didn’t find her as gorgeous as she knew she was.

“Well, I guess we should go in so you can show me around,” she said, less than enthusiastically.

Michael, the six year old said, “Ain’t much to see.”

When they got inside, Jessica realized how right he was. There was no parlor, no sitting room… “Here’s the kitchen,” Gretchen was saying, “Up there is where the boys sleep.” Then she took her hand and led her to a small bedroom and said, “This one is mine, Pa said you’ll sleep in here with me for a while.” Jessica tried to control her facial expressions. He wasn’t even going to sleep with her? Gretchen pulled her the two steps across the hall to a slightly, but not much, bigger room and said, “This is Pa’s room. The baby sleeps in here too.” Jessica’s stomach suddenly felt sick.

“Where’s the…the bathroom?”

“We don’t have a room for baths,” the little girl said, “We have a tub out back by the well.”

“I mean where do you…you know…pee?”

Gretchen giggled, “In the outhouse,” she said like it was the silliest question she’d ever heard.

“And where is the outhouse?” she asked.

“Out back on the other side of the root cellar,” Gretchen said, “Do you need to use it?”

Maybe to throw up, Jessica thought. “No, thank you, I’m fine,” Other than the unmade beds and a few cups in the sink, it was at least clean. They must be a neat family that would at least help.
